Salah al-Din Citadel and the Alabaster Mosque

Our first stop is the iconic Citadel of Salah el-Din, also known as the Cairo Citadel. It is a medieval fortress built by the legendary Islamic leader Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi to protect the city of Cairo against the Crusaders' attacks. Then it became the seat of Egyptian rulers for about 700 years.

The citadel stands on the Mokattam hills, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Cairo.

The crown jewel of the Cairo Citadel is the magnificent mosque of Mohammed Ali, constructed between 1830 and 1848, following the Ottoman architectural style. You’ll be impressed by the shiny domes, elegant minarets, and the luxurious internal design of the mosque. Also, the walls of the mosque are paneled with alabaster, which is why the mosque is sometimes known as “the alabaster mosque”.

Khan El Khalili Bazaar

Then we’ll head to Khan El-Khalili Bazaar, the largest bazaar in Africa, where you can feel hundreds of years of civilization blending with Egypt’s authentic spirit. The Bazaar of Khan Elkhalili is packed with countless shops and stalls where you can buy whatever you need, from spices, perfumes, clothes, to jewelry and handmade crafts.

Coptic Cairo

After that, we’ll step into the Coptic Cairo to visit its landmarks and learn more about the Coptic era in Egyptian history.

  • Hanging Church

The hanging church is a must-see attraction in Old Cairo because it is the oldest and most prominent church in Cairo. It is known by locals as “El-muallaqa,” which means the hanging church, because it stands on the top of a Roman tower.

  • Church of St. Sergius

Locals refer to it as “Abu Serga,” which holds special significance as it is believed to have been built over one of the crypts where the Holy Family took refuge during their journey through Egypt.

  • Ben Ezra Synagogue

This 9th-century Jewish temple is the oldest of its type in Cairo. However, it also holds unique significance as it is home to the “Genizah,” a collection of ancient Jewish manuscripts that shed light on centuries of Middle Eastern history.

This village is locally known as the Garbage City, as it is home to the garbage collectors, or “Zabaleen” in Arabic. Here, tons of Garbage are collected every day, then the inhabitants of the Garbage city begin to carefully sort it by hand to collect plastics, glass, paper, and metals, then clean it and sell it to factories for recycling.

The Cave Church

Can you imagine that this site is home to the largest church in the Middle East, with a capacity of more than 20,000 people. It is the stunning church of St. Simon, which is also called the cave church because it is built at the heart of the mountain.
