Egypt, a land of timeless treasures and awe-inspiring heritage, offers a rich tapestry of experiences for any traveler. This 5-day, 4-night itinerary through Cairo and Alexandria captures the essence of Egypt—from the majestic pyramids and ancient tombs to the Greco-Roman charm of the Mediterranean coast. You’ll explore world-famous museums, sacred mosques and churches, bustling markets, and historic coastal landmarks, all while enjoying warm Egyptian hospitality.
Day 1: Arrival and the Great Pyramids of Giza
Your journey begins in Cairo, Egypt’s sprawling capital and gateway to antiquity. After arriving at Cairo International Airport and checking in to your hotel, your adventure starts with a visit to one of the world’s most iconic sites: the Giza Plateau.
Standing proudly on the edge of the desert, the Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure dominate the skyline, each constructed over 4,500 years ago. You’ll walk in the shadows of these mighty structures, learning about the brilliant engineering of the ancient Egyptians. The site also includes the legendary Great Sphinx, a colossal limestone statue believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre, silently guarding the pyramids.
You can opt for a camel ride across the sands or delve deeper by entering the interior of one of the pyramids (optional with ticket). In the evening, relax with a traditional Egyptian dinner or consider attending the Sound and Light Show at the pyramids for a magical storytelling experience.
Day 2: Museum Day and Old Cairo Exploration
On your second day in Cairo, immerse yourself in Egypt’s rich cultural heritage through its museums and ancient neighborhoods. Start your morning at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, home to more than 120,000 artifacts. Marvel at the golden mask and treasures of King Tutankhamun, ancient statues, sarcophagi, and relics spanning over 3,000 years.
Next, head to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat. This modern and interactive museum tells the story of Egypt from prehistoric times to the modern day. A highlight is the Royal Mummies Hall, where you can come face to face with the preserved remains of great pharaohs such as Ramses II and Hatshepsut.
In the afternoon, explore Coptic Cairo, a serene neighborhood that preserves Egypt’s early Christian legacy. Visit the Hanging Church, built over a Roman gatehouse, and Abu Serga Church, believed to have sheltered the Holy Family. A stop at Ben Ezra Synagogue highlights the city’s Jewish history.
Round off your day in Islamic Cairo. Wander through Al-Muizz Street, lined with centuries-old mosques and Islamic architecture. Visit the majestic Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa’i Mosques, standing opposite the Citadel, then enjoy shopping and mint tea at the bustling Khan El Khalili Bazaar.
Day 3: Day Trip to Alexandria – The Mediterranean Jewel
After breakfast, journey north to Alexandria by private car or train (approximately 2.5–3 hours). This coastal city, founded by Alexander the Great, offers a completely different ambiance, blending Greco-Roman heritage with a relaxed Mediterranean vibe.
Your first stop is the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, an underground necropolis dating to the 2nd century AD. These tombs uniquely combine Pharaonic, Greek, and Roman art styles, with carved statues and symbolic reliefs lining the passageways. Next, visit Pompey’s Pillar, a towering granite column erected in honor of Emperor Diocletian, and explore the ruins of the once-grand Serapeum.
Nearby, you’ll find the Roman Amphitheater, the only one discovered in Egypt. This well-preserved site includes marble seating, mosaic floors, and an ancient lecture hall.
Enjoy a seafood lunch at a restaurant overlooking the harbor, then visit the striking Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a modern revival of the famed ancient library. Its sleek architecture and expansive halls include museums, art galleries, and a vast reading space.
End your Alexandria tour at the Qaitbay Citadel, a 15th-century fortress built on the original site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Walk along the Corniche to take in beautiful sea views before returning to Cairo for the night.
Day 4: The Citadel, Islamic Cairo, and Nile Dinner Cruise
Back in Cairo, explore the formidable Citadel of Saladin, a medieval fortress built in the 12th century to protect the city. The highlight within is the magnificent Mosque of Muhammad Ali, with its gleaming alabaster walls and sweeping views over the city.
Continue your journey through Islamic Cairo with a deeper exploration of Al-Muizz Street, home to some of the oldest mosques and Islamic buildings in Egypt. Admire the artistry of the Qalawun Complex, Al-Hakim Mosque, and ornate medieval gates like Bab Zuweila.
In the evening, treat yourself to a memorable Nile Dinner Cruise. Sail along the world’s longest river while enjoying a buffet dinner, live music, a traditional Tanoura dance, and belly dancing performances—an unforgettable way to celebrate your final night in Cairo.
Day 5: Departure
Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy a relaxed morning or opt for a quick visit to the nearby Grand Egyptian Museum (if open), showcasing Egypt’s most complete collection of ancient artifacts in a state-of-the-art facility near the Giza Pyramids.
Afterward, transfer to Cairo International Airport for your departure, concluding your unforgettable Egyptian journey.
